Bennie Maupin

The bass clarinet is Bennie's best-loved instrument, though he plays an array of other reed instruments as well, including the soprano saxophone, piccolo and alto flute.

If you believe in the afterlife, the ghost of his clarinet can be heard in the mysterious atmosphere of the Bitches Brew, recorded in 1969 with Miles Davis, one of the all-time phantasmic albums in jazz. On the other end of the spectrum, he makes a wonderful appearance in a medley of flavor and funk on Herbie Hancock's album, Mwandishi.

In his career, he also recorded with Horace Silver, Roy Haynes, and Lee Morgan, among others, and released a handful of solo albums.
