The Nelson Jazz Club is based in Nelson, New Zealand, with a membership in excess of 200 active members.
Whilst listed as a Jazz Club, the membership comprises of a diverse range of musicians and supporters, ranging from fully professional players, through to enthusiastic supporters of many musical styles including Jazz, Blues, Rock and Classic, with a strong growth in Contemporary Styles.
The Club has permanent Clubrooms (sponsored by Radio Network, situated in Central Nelson, and is a rehearsal venue for the many groups active in the Nelson scene.
Every effort is made to encourage and expand the membership, not only to those musicians interested in gaining extra knowledge from the perhaps more experienced amateurs and professionals, but also to people just interested in the various styles of jazz, blues, indeed all music forums.
The city of Nelson has a diverse range of cultures, lifestyles and professions, that is why the Nelson Jazz Club continues to go from strength to strength, and enjoys an enviable reputation for professionalism and social contact from within New Zealand and overseas.
Weekly Jazz
Each Tuesday 52 weeks of the year, the Jazz Club via its members, presents live music at one of Nelson's Landmark Pubs, the Victorian Rose in Trafalgar Street. Local music lovers and tourists from all over the globe, enjoy Traditional Jazz, Western Swing, Hip-Hop, Jazz Funk, and as always, those great old Standards from yesteryear.
Nelson's own Bourbon Street Beat, easily the best know home-grown identity with their distinctive sound and New Orleans Style, are regular performers, along with The Steve Flemming Band, Nev Claughton's Mr Music Allstars, Andrew Leachman, Breezin', Gabor Tolnay , The Gabor Trio, the list goes on.
The Victorian Rose, it's management and staff, have for many years supported the Nelson Jazz Club, and the association is definitely to mutual benefit. On most nights, particularly in the summer months, the "pub" is packed with musicians and friends, overseas guests and visitors from around New Zealand. The atmosphere is friendly and convivial, with many lasting friendships being made. Reunions of old friends and supporters happen almost weekly at "The Vic", and a visit to Nelson would not be complete without taking in this landmark right in the centre of town.
Another famous institution in Nelson, is the world famous "Nelson School of Music", part of local heritage, and regarded as having one of the country's finest auditoriums dating back over generations. The acoustics and facilities are astounding with virtually weekly performances includuing Opera, Classical Music, Shows and Musicals. The full-time students at the school perform regular events both classical and contemporary, and it is at the NSOM the Nelson Jazz Club perform.
Charity and Support is high on the list of the club's priorities, and it is not unusual to find members involved in fund-raising performances for local clubs and organizations, many of which are performed free of charge. Hours of tireless upaid work go into these performances, with the usual high degree of professionalism always apparent.
