The Trad Jazz Youth Band Festival (TJYBF)presents student ensembles playing traditional (trad) jazz which here means the various styles of New Orleans jazz and their outgrowths, encompassing styles sometimes called Dixieland, classic jazz, hot jazz, Chicago style, San Francisco style, etc. A hallmark of traditional jazz is the New Orleans tradition of several wind instruments playing polyphonically, i.e., ensemble improvisation.
The TJYBF is an IAJE-approved, competitive jazz festival. It is co-hosted by the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society (STJS) and Sacramento State University (SSU) Jazz Studies in cooperation with the Traditional Jazz Educators Network for middle school, high school, college, jazz club, and private instructor-sponsored combos playing traditional jazz. Combos may choose to perform competitively or non-competitively. Every combo will receive a feedback clinic following its performance.
